On public charges of the Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison a former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea of the sixth convocation, convicted of treason (Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code). Only three sentences in absentia have been handed down in 70 cases against former deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

It was reported by the ARC Prosecutor's Office, which proved to the court that in 2014 the convict, together with other deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea, voted for several illegal resolutions to hide the fact of the occupation of Crimea by the Russian armed forces, and legitimize the actions of the occupying state.

"It is about supporting the decision to hold the “Crimean referendum”, which was supposed to show the picture of “free expression of the will of the Crimeans”, the adoption of a resolution “On the declaration of independence of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol”, which provided for "Crimea’s accession to Russia“.

Contrary to the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which terminated the powers of deputies of the parliament of the Autonomy, continuing to implement the criminal intentions of the occupying state, former deputies voted for the resolution on "Independence of Crimea" and "Succession of the Republic of Crimea", - the message said.

According to the head of the prosecutor's office, Igor Ponochovny, Russia used members of the Crimean parliament to cover up the occupation and give legitimacy to their actions.

"In total, out of 99 deputies who were members of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea at the time of the occupation of the peninsula, indictments against 70 deputies have been pending in court for years, but so far only three sentences in absentia have been handed down", - Igor Ponochovny said.
