Lawyer Serhiy Zayets commented on the refusal of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to leave the right to manage the Cathedral for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in occupied Simferopol

The lawyer, expert at the Regional Center for Human Rights Serhiy Zayets thought, that on 4 of the August the Russian Supreme Court's refusal to reconsider the decision to evict the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) from Simferopol Cathedral is to liquidate the Ukrainian Orthodox community in occupied Crimea, which borders on genocide.

It was announced by the lawyer in Facebok.

"Formally, this is not genocide, but it borders on it. Russia is destroying another Ukrainian religious and the cultural group also continues to cleanse Crimea of everything Ukrainian", - stated Zayets.

What is knows

  • The decision to evict from the temple, the occupation courts ruled in the summer of 2019. Real trying to eviction began in late August of that year. The administration of the Crimean diocese successfully resisted the government for almost a year.
  • Initially, the execution of the decision was suspended by the Arbitration Court of the Central District. But this court quickly rejected the complaint and trying to eviction the church from the temple resumed.
  • On December of the 2019 year, Arbitration Court of the Russian Federation suspended the decision again.
  • On March and June of the 2020 year, the Military Forces of the Russian Federation extended the term of consideration of the cassation appeal.

  • For a week before that, the occupation catchpoll handed over to the Archbishop of the Crimean Diocese of the OCU Clement a resolution on the demolition of the church in occupied Evpatoria on the day of the 20th anniversary of the spiritual dignity of the archbishop.
  • The defence announced its intention to file a review of the decision of the occupation "Evpatoria City Court", which ordered the Orthodox Church of Ukraine to demolish the church in Evpatoria.
  • The Representation of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea condemned the decision of the occupation court. The Archbishop Evstratiy (Zorya) of Chernihiv and Nizhyn also opposed too.
  • According to Kliment, construction began before 2014 and the OCU has the relevant documents for the temple. Thus in the statement of claim, it is said that in OCU there are no documents for construction of a temple on the specified site.
  • On 24 of the September, the occupation department of the Crimean Ministry of Justice denied registration to a Ukrainian Orthodox parish on the semi-island for the third time.
