On February 14, 2022, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Kyiv for talks with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. The leaders discussed ways to find a peaceful solution to the conflict with Russia, as well as political and economic support for Ukraine from the German government.

Prior to his visit, Scholz said that Germany expressed constant solidarity and support for Ukraine.

"We urgently expect signs of de-escalation from Moscow. Further military aggression will have very serious consequences for Russia. I completely agree with our allies in this. We are witnessing a very, very serious threat to peace in Europe, "the German chancellor wrote on Twitter.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz discussed the purchase of weapons to Ukraine through the structures of the North Atlantic Alliance, in particular the NATO Support and Procurement Agency.

"It is very important for Ukraine to procure weapons and military equipment using the mechanisms of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency. I also raised this issue, "Zelensky said at a briefing following a meeting with Scholz in Kyiv.

Also, after meeting with the German Chancellor, the President of Ukraine stated that the leaders have "some differences in the assessment" of the risks associated with Nord Stream-2, which Russia intends to supply gas to Europe bypassing Ukraine. The head of state stressed that the project is a "geopolitical weapon" and Ukraine needs energy and security guarantees.

The security risks associated with Nord Stream 2 were discussed in detail. And here we have some differences in assessment. I stressed that our position is unchanged. We are looking at Nord Stream 2 today solely through the prism of energy and security threats to us and the region. We clearly understand that this project is a geopolitical weapon. That is why Ukraine needs energy and security guarantees. I proposed to launch our specific strategic dialogue in the energy sphere, within which energy guarantees and effective support of our state in the energy sphere will be developed. It is important that Germany becomes a guarantor of continued gas transit through Ukraine", - the president said.

It will be recalled that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called Scholz's visit to Kyiv "extremely important".

"We do not have any exaggerated expectations, but this will be the first long substantive conversation between the German Chancellor and the President of Ukraine, where they really synchronize their positions with which the Chancellor will go to Moscow", - Kuleba explained.

The talks between Scholz and Zelensky lasted more than two hours, and they went to the joint briefing closer to 16:00 instead of the planned 14:20.

Zelensky said that against the background of threats against Russia, serious sanctions should be applied.

"They discussed the introduction of a comprehensive package of sanctions against aggression. My position is clear, known. I believe that they are the most effective approach in deterring aggression and are the use of preventive signals", - the head of state said.

The German Chancellor has promised a quick repayment of a 150 million euro loan. He stated that no country has financially supported Ukraine like Germany.

The German politician reminded of the resumption of the Normandy format and the meeting of advisers. Olaf Scholz reiterated that in the situation at the border he hopes for diplomacy and dialogue.

The Chancellor also stated that Ukraine should submit a bill on the special status of Donbass. Like, Zelensky assured him of that.

"Zelensky assured me that Ukraine would provide me with a draft law on special status and local elections", - Scholz said.
