The commander of the German Navy, Kai-Achim Schenbach, has been forced to resign and is retiring amid a scandal sparked by his public statements. An official announcement from the German Ministry of Defense is expected in the near future.

According to the German publication Bild, his resignation has already been accepted.

According to journalists, the 56-year-old vice admiral is leaving the military service, officially at his own request. On Saturday, he submitted his resignation to Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, which she accepted.
