On January 9, Crimean lawyer Nikolai Polozov presented his book “The Case of February 26” on the mainland of Ukraine. He was the defender of the defendants in this case, along with a group of other lawyers. All political prisoners in this case are at large.

He announced it on Facebook.

“This is my book “The Case of February 26”, which I wrote in 2019. It is about the events that took place in Crimea, in connection with the lawsuit against Akhtem Chiygoz, in which we analyzed the beginning of the Russian occupation of Crimea, due to the events that took place in February 2014 in Crimea", -  the lawyer wrote.

Polozov said that the presentation of the book was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The presentation took place in Chernivtsi and Lviv. The presentation in Ternopil is scheduled for January 10.

The lawyer said that it is possible to order the book online.

 

What is known

  • On February 26, 2014, clashes between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian rallies took place near the Verkhovna Rada in Simferopol. Representatives of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people opposed the annexation of Crimea and sought to prevent a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, which could take such a decision.
  • Two people died in the stampede, 30 people were injured. Some Crimean Tatars broke into the Verkhovna Rada building, but when they learned that the meeting had been postponed, they left it.
  • The first accused in the "February 26 case" was a member of the Mejlis, People's Deputy of Ukraine Akhtem Chiygoz, accused of organizing mass riots. Chiygoz was detained on January 29, 2015.
  • The Russian occupation security forces made several arrests in the case. Three defendants were released from jail on bail, one pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence.
  • Until February 14, 2019, and the entry into force of the sentence, Ali Asanov and Mustafa Degermenci remained under house arrest, who received suspended sentences. Akhtem Chiygoz was released and extradited to Turkey in late October 2017.
