Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said there was a high probability that Russia would invade Ukraine. Only "huge sanctions" can deter it from such a step.

This was reported by The Guardian.

"I think huge sanctions against Russia will be needed again to curb what seems very likely to be a Russian invasion of Ukraine. And I think our allies need to be convinced of that. Russia needs to understand that we are united", - he said in the message.

Adam Schiff also noted that he still does not understand Putin's full motivation.

He said the invasion would lead to "more NATO assets coming closer to Russia and having the opposite effect from what Putin is trying to achieve".

"And I don't think anything other than the level of sanctions that Russia has ever seen will hold it back, and that's exactly what we need to do with our allies", - he said.
