Estonian Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets believes that the main purpose of contacts between representatives of NATO countries and Russia is to prevent the Russian escalation of Ukraine.

ERR writes about it.

"It is true that a very active diplomatic process is underway, in which the allies are communicating with each other and with Moscow. And the night before, there was a telephone conversation between President Biden and Putin. In our opinion, the main purpose of these contacts was to keep the channels of dialogue open, to keep Moscow from escalating against Ukraine through the messages we send directly. Such messages are now being transmitted both publicly and through diplomatic channels, and the allies are, of course, exchanging information on this issue", - the head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry said.

She recalled that the EU member states and the United States had agreed in the first half of December that in the event of a military escalation in the border regions of Ukraine, they would resist, including through economic sanctions.

Liimets added that it is very important to prevent military escalation, keep open channels for dialogue and, of course, help Ukraine restore its territorial integrity.
