The US Navy's aircraft carrier strike group, led by the USS Harry S.Truman, will stay in the Mediterranean, suspending its movement to the Middle East amid fears over the accumulation of thousands of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border. Earlier it was planned that they would continue their journey to the Persian Gulf region.

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin gave the order, AP reports.

According to an anonymous source, such an event reflects the need for a permanent presence in Europe and is necessary to reassure US allies and partners in the region.

Earlier, US intelligence found that Russia could invade Ukraine next year.

The aggressor country can use 175 thousand troops on several fronts.

The news agency noted that by creating such tensions and threats to Ukraine, the Kremlin is demanding assurances from Washington that our country will not become a member of NATO and that the Alliance will renounce certain military measures in and around Ukraine.

For his part, Austin reaffirmed the US readiness to help Ukraine defend itself in the event of a full-scale Russian invasion. Washington continues to support Kyiv "in defending its sovereign territory", the military said.
