The Security Service has announced the suspicion of the head of the Russian military company Wagner, who commanded the fighting against the anti-terrorist operation forces near Debaltsev in 2014-2015.

This was reported by the SBU press service.

"Investigators of the Ukrainian special services in the pre-trial investigation reported in absentia the suspicion of the head of the Russian private military company (WPC)" Wagner ".

According to law enforcement officers, the suspect is a Russian citizen who headed the APC to carry out covert military operations in Russia.

"It has been established that in the period from July 2014 to March 2015 he was in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The attacker acted by prior agreement with high-ranking officials of the Russian Armed Forces and under their control", -was stated in the press service.

The investigation alleges that the man commanded units of the APC militants subordinated to him, which, together with units of the regular troops of the Russian Federation and illegal armed groups, fought against the Armed Forces.

"The facts of intensive shelling of Ukrainian positions in the Debaltseve direction by Wagner militants have been documented.

According to the investigation, during his stay in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the leader of the enemy group coordinated his actions with the former commander of the 2nd Army Corps of the Russian Federation.

Therefore, the man is suspected of committing crimes under Part 3 of Art. 110, part 5 of Art. 27, part 2 of Art. 28 and Part 2 of Art. 437 of the Criminal code of Ukraine.

The pre-trial investigation into the case is ongoing. The issue of declaring the suspect internationally wanted to be prosecuted for crimes against Ukraine's state security is being resolved.

What is known

  • On December 13, the Council of the European Union approved sanctions against the private Russian military company Wagner, eight of its employees, including its leader Dmitry Utkin and three related legal entities. He called the actions of the APC in Syria, Libya and Ukraine the basis for EU sanctions.
