Ukrainian political prisoner Andriy Zakhtey, who was imprisoned on baseless charges of "plotting a sabotage using weapons", spent two months in the basement of a Simferopol penal colony for allegedly violating the regime.

Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova announced this on Facebook on December 5.

"Despite health problems, the Ukrainian citizen was subjected to subhuman conditions of cold and dampness. Andriy has chronic diseases, stomach ulcers, complains of back pain, spinal injuries, numbness of arms and legs", - Denisova said.

According to her, the relevant actions of the occupiers violate the guaranteed rules of Art. 3 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. And paragraph 22 of the minimum standard rules for the treatment of prisoners of 30.08.1955, approved by the UN Economic and Social Council.

The ombudsperson appealed to her Russian counterpart Tatiana Moskalkova to take appropriate measures to restore the rights of Ukrainian Andriy Zakhtey: to ensure proper conditions of detention, provide the necessary medical care, and find out the legality of keeping him in solitary confinement.

She also added that Zakhtey's daughter Oleksandra turns six on December 5. Since 2016, after the Ukrainian was detained, his wife has been raising a child on her own.

"The girl celebrates her birthday without her father. I wish Alexandra the best because parents should be there for their kids", - Denisova wrote.
