The second round of the debate in Ukraine vs Russia over the detention of Ukrainian warships began in The Hague.

The International Arbitration, established under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, is holding a hearing in The Hague this week in the case of Ukraine v. Russia on the detention in November 2018 of Ukrainian warships and sailors in the Kerch Strait.

The second round of debates between the parties began in The Hague on Thursday.

Today, October 14, the Russian Federation will speak, and tomorrow the Ukrainian delegation will have the floor.

It is worth noting that there will be no more open parts. Only the introductory speech made by the agents of each party on October 11 and 12 was open.

What is known

  • On October 11, the Russian side had the floor. Russia denies jurisdiction over arbitration in The Hague on Ukraine's claim.
  • On October 12, the Ukrainian side spoke. Ukraine has called on arbitration to recognize its jurisdiction in this case.
  • The hearings concern preliminary objections filed by the Russian side and take place in the building of the Palace of Peace in a hybrid format.
  • On November 25, 2018, the Russian military rammed, fired and captured Ukrainian boats "Berdyansk" and "Nikopol" and the tug "Yani Kapu", which were heading from Odessa to Mariupol through the Kerch Strait.
