The Prague City Court has arrested a Russian citizen, Alexander Franchetti, who was previously detained at Ukraine's request for involvement in the 2014 occupation of Crimea.

According to the Czech newspaper Novinky, now the Russian will wait for the decision on extradition, which was requested by the Ukrainian side.

Franchetti's lawyer, Jan Schwartz, told reporters after his arrest that Ukraine's request for extradition was politically motivated and had nothing to do with criminal activity.

"Pre-trial detention is common in extradition proceedings. It is rare for a client to be released. Let's hope that the court will not succumb to this politicization in the next extradition process", - Schwartz said.

According to the publication, in Ukraine Franchetti faces from two to eight years in prison for membership in a paramilitary organization. However, Jan Schwartz claims that if his client is extradited, he will also be tortured and threatened with death in Ukraine.

"He was not in any paramilitary organization, he was only one of the organizers of the defence of Sevastopol at a time when there was de facto anarchy, and there were various militias", - the lawyer said.

He also filed a complaint against the detention, which is to be considered by the Prague High Court.
