A group of Republican senators in the US Congress has threatened to block two candidates for the Treasury if the administration does not change its position on Russia's Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline and impose new sanctions on it.

This is stated in a letter from Senator Pete Toomey and 11 other Republicans in the Senate Banking Committee to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

The senators stressed that PP-2 directly harms the national security interests of the United States and its allies.

"If this project is completed, it will increase Vladimir Putin's detrimental influence on Europe, destabilize Ukraine's fragile security, and contribute to further Russian aggression", - was informed in the letter.

Senators are threatening to oppose the approval of Brian Nelson and Elizabeth Rosenberg, who were nominated for positions in the US Treasury Department related to the implementation of sanctions.

"We urge you to change course on Nord Stream 2 and join us in protecting the Congress of European allies and partners from malicious Russian aggression", - was informed in the statement.

What is known

  • On July 21, the United States and Germany agreed that the PP-2 would be completed without US sanctions. At the same time, Germany has pledged to take action if Russia tries to use the pipeline as a political weapon against Ukraine or continues its aggression against it.
