The summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe starts today, June 21, in Strasbourg. The issue of protection of the rights of Crimean Tatars is on the agenda.

This was reported on the PACE website.

It is noted that the resolution was proposed by the representative of the Icelandic delegation, Sunna Torhildur. The document describes violations of the rights of Crimean Tatars by the occupiers in Crimea, their persecution and other violations of humanitarian law.

The resolution calls on Russia to comply with the following requirements:

  • to abolish the illegal occupation of Crimea;
  • to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the deaths and disappearances of political activists who criticized the occupation;
  • refrain from pressure and threats to shut down independent media and resume the Crimean Tatar TV channel ATR;
  • refrain from persecution and pressure on Crimean Tatar institutions and organizations;
  • to allow the national leader of the Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemilev and the chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov to return to the Crimea and to allow them to cross the administrative border freely;
  • to ensure respect for the rights of Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians.

According to MP Yevhenia Kravchuk, it was fundamentally important for the Ukrainian delegation that the consideration of the resolution not be postponed.

"Returning the topic is an important victory because the violation of the rights of Crimean Tatars by the occupying authorities in Crimea is still going on, people need protection and restoration of justice", - Kravchuk wrote, emphasizing that the Ukrainian delegation expects opposition from the Russian delegation.
