A manual for the media on adequate coverage of Crimea issues in the context of the occupation was presented in Kyiv.

This was announced by representatives of the Crimean human rights group during a round table "Crimea in the mirror of the media" on July 9 at Ukrinform.

ZMINA, Crimean Human Rights Group in cooperation with the Representation of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea prepared and presented a Q&A manual for the media "Crimea in the context of occupation".

According to human rights activists, it is important that journalists continue to gather information on the occupied peninsula, use verified sources and correct terminology, covering the occupation of the peninsula.

"Many Ukrainians know about the Crimean events only from the media, so their attitude towards Crimeans is based on such information. Ignoring the context of the occupation or incorrect coverage by journalists of issues related to the occupation of Crimea affects the preservation of ties between residents of occupied territories and Ukraine controlled areas , and for the process of future deoccupation and reintegration ", - said Olga Skrypnyk, chairman of the Crimean human rights group.

Skrypnyk added that special attention should be paid to the regional press, because human rights activists often note in such media that they do not meet the standards of journalism: the inaccuracy of reports and the dominance of subjective assessments in the news about Crimea.

According to Tetyana Pechonchyk, chairwoman of the ZMINA Center for Human Rights, it is important that Ukrainian media continue to receive exclusive information from occupied Crimea and carefully check reports in the event of secondary sources.

"Unfortunately, the coverage of Crimean issues is becoming more superficial, and it is important to make efforts to get quality information from there. In addition, we are constantly fixing problem areas where journalists lack knowledge or understanding, in particular, about the nuances of using correct terminology in the context of occupation, the basic principles of international humanitarian law, etc", - said the head of ZMINA.

According to Daria Sviridova, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the idea of creating the manual arose after communication with other authorities and journalists.

"In the manual, we tried to answer the most common questions or dispel myths or misconceptions in the context of the temporary occupation of the Crimean peninsula", - said Sviridova.

The manual discusses, in particular, the importance of using the term "occupation" instead of "annexation of Crimea", how to correctly call the so-called "authorities" operating in Crimea after the occupation, how Ukrainian and foreign journalists can legally enter Crimea, that Crimean people remain citizens of Ukraine, and the passports of the Russian Federation issued to them are insignificant, etc.
