On 20 February, Ukraine marks the eighth Day of Remembrance of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, which is designed to honour the participants of the events on the Maidan. This date is the most tragic in the history of the Revolution of Dignity, as it was on this day that most activists died in the centre of Kyiv. On this occasion, a number of memorable events will be held in the Ukrainian capital, where the main historical events took place.

What is known about this day:

Remembrance Day of the Heroes of the Celestial Hundred is celebrated annually in accordance with the presidential decree on 11 of February 2015 "On honouring the heroism of the participants of the Revolution of Dignity and perpetuating the memory of the Heroes of the Celestial Hundred". It is on 20 February that the shootings of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred take place. On that day, 48 protesters were killed and fatally wounded in the centre of the Ukrainian capital. This date was a turning point in the events of the Revolution of Dignity.

A total of 107 victims became Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. They are different in age, gender, from different parts of Ukraine and from abroad. The oldest of the Heroes, Ivan Nakonechny, was 82 years old, and the youngest, Nazariy Voitovych, was only 17.

Memorable events

According to the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity, on February 20, Kyiv will host exhibitions, tours, presentations of relevant videos and publications dedicated to the anniversary of the events on the Maidan, as well as an all-Ukrainian information campaign.

A series of commemorative events on this day will be opened by a memorial service near the chapel on the Alley of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, 6, which will begin at 10:00. Then at 12:00 at the same address, in front of the Bell of Dignity near the temple of Archangel Michael and the Ukrainian New Martyrs, the memory of the Hero of the Heavenly Hundred Viktor Khomyak will be honoured as part of the "Hero's Birthday" project. The Bell of Dignity will be preceded by a portrait of the Hero and a living flower, as well as a commemorative bell.

At 13:00 in the Museum of the Maidan, located on Independence Square, 18/2, there will be a presentation of a series of editions of postcards from the collection of the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity. The following publications are presented at the event: "Maidan. Creativity of Freedom" (protest painting), "Maidan. Symbols of the Revolution" (painted helmets), "Maidan. Light and Shadows of the Revolution" (the best documentary photos), "Shields. Symbols of the Maidan", " Euromaidan is ... Ideals of protest "(leaflets of the Public Sector of the Euromaidan)," Maidan. Apostles of Dignity "(artistic photos of Yuri Bilak)", Ivan Semesyuk. Banderiki. Touching junta "(embroidered protest pictures)", Alexey Belyusenko. Extremist's diary. Reportage painting ".

After that, at 14:00 on the Alley of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred in Kyiv, a documentary exhibition "Cases of the Maidan: on the way to justice and history" will take place. She will talk about the "Maidan cases", the results and problems of court proceedings, as well as provide up-to-date statistics on these cases. Also on this day at 14:00 in the Maidan Museum, there will be a mono-performance "Maidanuty" by Yuri Chebotaryov, who survived the Revolution of Dignity and tells an autobiographical story related to the Maidan. At 18:00, a memorial service for the Heavenly Hundred and fighters for the independence of Ukraine will be held along the Alley of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, and after that, the Rays of Dignity will be lit there.

In addition, the celebration of the Heroes of the Maidan will continue in the coming days. Thus, on February 21, the capital's Museum of Books and Printing will host a meeting with the founders of the "Maidan Museum / Freedom Museum" initiative in the exhibition space "Creative Force of Freedom. Maidan Public Initiatives". The event will be held at st. Lavrska, 9, from 12:00 to 14:00.

The presentation of the scientific collection "Revolution of Dignity: on the way to history" based on the materials of the international scientific forum is expected on 23rd February in the capital's Trade Union Building. The event will start at 17:00 at the address: Independence Square, 18/2.
