Ukraine has imposed sanctions against Russian airlines for flights to Crimea

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has agreed on sanctions against Russian airlines for flights to occupied Crimea. They were banned from flying over the territory of Ukraine and transit of the resources. The Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol appealed to the Ukrbureau of Interpol to bring 109 previously arrested violators to the international search base.

The relevant decision was made at a meeting of the Ukrainian government.

The Cabinet of Ministers proposes to impose sanctions for three years against the following airlines:

  • KrasAvia
  • Komiaviatrans
  • Azimut Airlines
  • IRAERO Airlines
  • Aviaservice
  • Tulpar Air
  • Aerolimousine
  • Pobeda
  • Simargl 

Kyiv will also ask the international community to impose sanctions. Relevant notes will be sent to the United States and the European Union.

Besides, at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomy, 81 more planes were arrested for violating the rules of international flights over the occupied peninsula.

“The prosecutor’s office of the autonomy has established about 500 and arrested 190 planes of Russian airlines that illegally carry out regular passenger air transportation to the occupied peninsula, violating international flight rules and Ukrainian legislation”, -  the statement reads.

What is known

  • Since March 2014, Ukraine has closed the airspace over the occupied peninsula due to the impossibility of supervising flight safety in the organization of air traffic and ensuring flight safety. All airports have been officially closed.
  • On November 17, the prosecutor’s office of the autonomy arrested 44 Russian planes for flights to occupied Crimea.
