The Supreme Court of Ukraine overturned the sentence of the former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea Vasyl Ganysh, who was previously convicted to 12 years in prison for treason. The court also remanded the case for re-appeal.

Ganysh's lawyer Andriy Rudenko told RBC-Ukraine about this.

"Today, the Supreme Court reviewed our cassation, overturned the verdict and returned the case for re-appeal", - he said.

The lawyer refused to disclose the motivation of the court decision.

What is known

  • The trial court found Ganysh guilty of subversive activities against Ukraine when he voted for Russia's "Crimean constitution" and ran in so-called elections under Russian law.
  • Ganysh is the only Crimean deputy who faced a prison term for treason after being detained in mainland Ukraine. The verdict came into force at the end of January 2020. The defense asked not to send him to prison, citing serious health. It is known that he planned to have heart surgery.
  • On October 26, the Bogunsky District Court of Zhytomyr released Ganysh on parole.
