Maria Surzhikova, Deputy Director for Research at the Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky Literary Memorial Museum, spoke about what Kotsyubynsky remembered for the Crimea.

"Mikhail Kotsyubynsky was in the Crimea as many as 4 times, he first arrived there in 1895 as part of the phylloxera commission. He was transferred from Bessarabia to Crimea. For Mykhailo, Crimea is a romantic place, because there he confessed to his bride Vera, in the tract of the Holy Trinity in 1895, and she agreed”, - Maria said.

In 2010, the Mikhail Kotsyubynsky Museum in Simeiz was restored.

Nadiya Kostyanets, a tour guide at the M. Kotsyubynsky Museum in Simeiz (2010–2015), told how she started working at the museum.

"It was the beginning of my museum work. I really liked it and I wanted to do as much as possible and better, as much as possible the exhibition, design and collect material. Excursions were free, mostly schoolchildren came, sometimes adults, there were no tickets”, - Nadiya recalls.

In 2015, Nadiya Kostyanets left the occupied Crimea for personal reasons and moved to the controlled territory of Ukraine. Since then, the museum has been monitored by Natalia Perminova from Crimea.

Natalia told the Public Crimea about Kotsyubynsky's Crimean works and how the museum works now.

“School students come to the excursion, mainly primary school, or students of those schools where Ukrainian language and literature are studied as an optional subject. Since 2017, literary meetings have been held on the basis of the museum. People read poems, perform musical works, including in Ukrainian”, - a museum employee said.

All the inscriptions of the expositions remained in the museum, as they were before the occupation - in Ukrainian. Literary and musical evenings are held in Ukrainian.

According to museum employee Natalia Perminova, the entrance to Kotsyubynsky's estate is currently free. The occupying power does not allocate money for the functioning of the museum. Everything works on the donations of visitors and activists.

Mykhailo Kotsyubynsky wrote 4 works about Crimea and Crimean Tatars. These are "Under the Minarets", "Into the Sinful World", "On the Stone" and "In the Shackles of Satan". All of them are translated into the Crimean Tatar language.

Literary critic Oleksandr Vasheleni told what Mikhail Kotsyubynsky was interested in Crimea.

"Apart from nature, he was very interested in the culture of the Crimean Tatars, including Islamic culture, as it was transformed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kotsyubynsky's Crimean Tatars are completely self-sufficient people, especially in his letters to his wife. From Alushta, he said that there is a separate Crimean kingdom, without the influence of Moscow. This fits in very well with modern realities, when we also see in the Crimea artificially trying to impose the Russian peace, which is not really inherent in this territory", - Alexander said.
