From January 1, 2024, Ukraine plans to abolish conscription.

This is stated in the decree of the President of Ukraine №36 / 2022 "On priority measures to strengthen the state's defense capabilities, increase the attractiveness of military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the gradual transition to a professional army", - was published on Tuesday, February 1.

"Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine… to prepare and submit to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine draft laws on… introduction of a model of intensive military training as a possible alternative form of conscription and termination of conscription of Ukrainian citizens for conscription from January 1, 2024", - was informed in the document.

This proposal of the President appeared in the context of plans for a gradual transition to the formation of personnel of the Armed Forces under contract.

Military expert Oleg Zhdanov told Channel 7 that they could have canceled it earlier. It all depended on the state and how motivated the contract would be for service in the Armed Forces.

"Let me remind you that until 2008 the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine was fully contractual, no conscripts were in the service. Then there was a reduction in funding, which led to the need to hire recruits", - Zhdanov said.

He also added that in the United States the service is contract, in Germany - a mixed type: redemption, alternative, conscription and contract. In our case, everything depends only on the state.

"I am a supporter of the contract army on a professional basis. This shows the greatest effectiveness of the use of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in any military conflict. Reinforcement should take place through reserve service. Not just a record, but the service itself, which will be under contract, where people will receive money for it from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine", - the expert assured.
