On August 9, Russia has begun large-scale military exercises involving specialists of all types of troops, ships of the Black Sea and Caspian Fleet, over 80 aircraft and helicopters. They will last until September 15. The training will be held at 20 training grounds, in particular in occupied Crimea and the separatist regions of Georgia - Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Suspilne learned from experts what to expect from these exercises.

Military expert Lasha Dzebisashvili said that such exercises are held regularly in the context of Georgia. He sees no new threats, as Russia has conducted similar exercises since 2008, although similar activities took place in the Georgian context until 2008, along with Ossetian and Abkhaz units.

“After 2014, the annexation of Crimea and the problems with the eastern parts of Ukraine, similar exercises began in and around Ukraine. Despite this, there is no need to talk about any completely new threats. The context in the region is changing, and we see these conflicts can not be called frozen. We see this both in the context of Russia and the recent escalation of the situation in Ukraine and around Ukraine when a few months ago we noticed the risks of a full-scale conflict", - Dzebisashvili said.

The expert mentioned Karabakh when no one expected such an escalation. According to him, such exercises do not give stability to Georgia or Ukraine, which is quite problematic.

“These exercises are quite large and often coincide with the exercises taking place in Georgia with the participation of NATO and other partners. All sides are showing readiness for battle”, - he added.

Another military expert, Giorgi Kanashvili, said that these battalion-tactical exercises were a threat and that the situation in Ukraine and Georgia was already similar to that during the Cold War.

“Neither Ukraine nor Georgia have freedom of action. We cannot relax and live under the illusion that Russia has finally parted ways with the idea of the post-Soviet space. Absolutely not. Any military action, movement of units, military exercises are always a threat to us. Georgia and Ukraine must realize that we are in the same situation as during the Cold War”, - the expert said.

According to him, any exercises under the Warsaw Pact were met by NATO with appropriate exercises. All units were on alert because no one could know what exercises could turn into a military confrontation.

“We cannot know whether the tactical movements of the units will end with them returning to their places of permanent deployment, or whether they will leave the equipment in place in the units ... If you look at the format of these exercises, it is a full range of actions, as in the air: air defence, mechanized units, field reconnaissance units. Everything is there”, - Kanashvili said.

According to Colonel Oleg Zhdanov, after the Sea Breeze 2021 exercise, Russia realized it could not oppose NATO member states, which had shown their strength and scale and Russia’s weakness.

“It all started with the fact that 21,000 servicemen were transferred to Crimea under the guise of helping the Crimean people to eliminate the floods that occurred in Crimea. But we have not seen a single Russian soldier there shovelling mudflows or streams there. We have seen such weapons as the T-90, one of the newest Russian tanks at firing ranges. Then they transferred the aircraft from the Arctic to Crimea. And now Russia, having gathered so many troops, is trying to show the West that they can assemble a strike group no less powerful than NATO member states”, - Zhdanov said.

The military expert also noted that these exercises are very similar to Sea Breeze 2021.

“They are making a Russian analogue of the Sea Breeze 2021 exercise. By showing NATO that they can fight. The fact is that the exercises revealed the obsolescence of the Black Sea Fleet. When they took the fleet to the Black Sea, everyone saw it. It is the oldest, weakest, and smallest of all the fleets of the Russian Federation”, - he said.

Zhdanov said that the danger is constant, it only increases, then decreases. It is currently growing because the Russian military is learning to fight. And the more powerful the Russian army, the harder it will be to live. But Ukraine has a privilege.

“What can we oppose - the training of troops, their equipment, especially the latest models of technology, modern technology. We have the privilege, the advantage is that we exercise together with NATO member states, and we use the latest methods of planning, organizing, and conducting hostilities - something that does not exist in the Russian Federation”, - he said.
